Re                     COMMUNITY NOTICE- Discharge of a firearm near 17th and Quebec

At around 1:30 am on Sunday, February 18th, our dispatcher received a call from a concerned student after he had heard the sounds of gunfire coming from the area of 17th and Quebec. Campus Safety & Security officers responded immediately, as did the Denver Police. Upon their arrival, they conducted a search for suspects or victims, but none were found. A neighbor reported seeing a black Chrysler 300 travelling northbound on Quebec Street from 17th shortly after hearing sounds of gunshots.

Campus Safety & Security and Denver Police officers have scoured the area in an effort to investigate what may have happened. They have inspected homes and buildings in the area (to include our campus) as well as vehicles and other property that may have been struck by stray bullets. They reviewed security camera video to try to identify persons who have been in the area at the time of the shooting. As a result of that investigation, they have only located empty shell casings in the street area of Quebec between 17th and 19th Avenues.

Because there were no eye witnesses to the incident, nor any involved persons at or near the scene at the time responders arrived, police are speculating that there may have either been shots fired between the occupants of two vehicles, or the occupant(s) of a single vehicle fired shots in the air.

Had the Campus Safety & Security officers who responded to the initial call determined that there was a serious and ongoing threat to the campus community, the timely warning assessment would have prompted an immediate notification to the campus, instructing campus residents to lock down and take shelter in their current locations.

Please remember to always report suspicious persons, vehicles, or activities to Campus Safety & Security. If you hear something that sounds like gunfire, get to safety immediately and report it as soon as possible, even if you aren’t sure what the sounds are. It is also important to remember that our campus is located in an urban environment, and we should continue to be aware of the problems that the city faces with regard to crime or safety concerns.

Thank you to those who called to report what they heard. If you have further information about this incident, please call Campus Safety & Security at 303-256-9500 or the Denver Police Department at 720-913-2000.
